Easy foot massage techniques to ease depression

An article by our Well-being Ambassador Giuliana Wheater and her video!

Four simple Science backed techniques to ease anxiety and boost mental health.

We are living in a crazy world!!

If you are neurotypical it is challenging enough but can you imagine what it is like if you are neurodiverse? Navigating the “normal” world was hard enough but now everything is so confusing and continually changing.

Babies born with a neurodiversity already have far higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol in their bodies than neurotypical babies.

Pre-covid this made them 2-6x more likely to pick up a mental health illness or challenge by the age of fourteen, with boys being twice as likely as girls. Imagine what that statistic is now?

Pre-Covid there were 80,000 under 10-year-olds with DIAGNOSED severe depression. Again, I wonder what that statistic is now?

Currently the UK has the highest suicide rate in the world.

So how can we help ourselves? And each other?

Remember that 80% of what we worry about never even happens and 12% we cannot do anything about anyway. So, let us take in hand that percentage of control we DO have.

Life cards happen to everyone … it is how we react to them, process them and what we do with them that matters.

In last week’s article and YouTube video I demonstrated four simple hand massage techniques so this week I am sharing four simple foot massage techniques. Even the most touch-sensitive and even touch adverse people I have met usually love a good hand or foot massage.

The techniques I have shared today, if practised regularly (and they can all take less than 5 minutes if you do all of them!) really do have a significant impact on reducing depression.

Blood pressure is lowered along with the heartbeat, the lungs are opened up so we feel we can “breathe” again and even more importantly we are boosting our daily dose of happiness and coping chemicals: Dopamine, Oxytocin, serotonin, and endorphins.

In particular we are stimulating serotonin, the neurotransmitter of happiness, confidence, and self-esteem but we are also boosting oxytocin, the neurotransmitter of love and nurture.

Endorphins will be stimulated to help reduce pain relief as well as surge is with that wonderful feeling of well-being.

Aches and pains are very much a part of long-term desires soon so we can ease these too.

Mood will improve with regular practice and sleep too.

So, give it a go!! I do it every day and it helps enormously.

See you next week, Lots of love, Giuliana xxx
