From Burnout to Balanced
From Burnout to BalancedA Passionate article of a mother’s viewssupporting Parents and Carers of Autistic children and adults through holistic therapies.
My name is Lorraine, and I am 52 years old and a proud mother to an amazing autistic daughter Heidi. With 17 yearsof lived experience, I have come to understand the profound challenges and rewards that this journey can bring.
I would love you to embrace, and read my personal, enriched journey, that has led me to become the extremely passionate and experienced holistic therapist that I am today,
Raising an autistic child has taught me countless lessons about patience, resilience, and the importance of celebrating every unique milestone. While the complexities of the autistic world can be daunting, the sheer colour, and authenticity that my daughter brings to our family and extended community of friends far outweigh the challenges.
Each day, I witness the strength, creativity, and distinct perspective that Heidi contributes, not only to our family but to everyone who has the privilege of knowing her. It is through her that I have learned to appreciate the beauty in diversity and the power of unconditional love.
So let me expand on why my passion lies in supporting parents and carers of the autistic community within my wellness hub, and why fostering partnerships with the professional agencies could bridge an existing gap for the integration of professional self-care holistic services.
Parent/Carer Burnout
Burnout is an issue among parents and carers of autistic individuals. I have felt this at times, and not so long ago, where chronic fatigue, irritability, and a sense of helplessnesscomes to mind. The constant demands and high levels of responsibility can drain energy reserves, making it difficult to cope with everyday tasks, plus the emotional toll of witnessing our loved ones’ struggles can further trigger stresslevels.
The impact of burnout on family dynamics can be profound. My wider family and I can resonate with this. It can lead to increased tension within the household, affect relationships between partners, and strain where there are siblings. The emotional, physical, and mental demands placed on parents and carers can unfortunately lead to burnout. This prolonged stress of caregiving, including navigating complex healthcare systems, advocating for educational support, and managing challenging behaviours, the weight of these responsibilities can lead to feelings of isolation, frustration, and alone with theemotional toll of witnessing our loved ones’ struggles can further add to our stress levels.
The Weight of Words
Seeing your child’s challenges laid out in black and white can feel overwhelming. This isn’t just a once done evaluation either, these reports become a consistent part of our child’sworld, which you cannot hide away from. The language used in reports such as the EHCP (Educational and Health Care Plan) can be an emotional and challenging experience. These documents are a collective of professional reports fromeducation providers, doctors, psychiatrists and healthcare professionals, while essential for outlining the support ourchild needs, often represent stark realities that can be difficult to process. Such reports can sometimes seem clinical and detached, which can make it hard for a parent/carer to acceptthe vibrant, unique individual you know your child to be. It can be a painful read. Fear and anxiety about what lies ahead, the uncertainty can be daunting, and whilst these documents can be difficult to read, they can also validate your experiences as a parent, and it is crucial to remember that reports do not define our children. I have concluded that reading reports about my daughter has given me a feeling of numbness at times and is one of the areas that I found to beoverwhelming and challenging.
This leads me to highlight my passion for a transformative integration of holistic therapies open to parents and carers of all disabilities.
Why I see the benefits for this wraparound integration of holistic therapies to be more accessible for SEN families.
Navigating the complexities of autism and associated mental health challenges is a heavy journey for any family. My firsthand experience with my daughter’s autism and mentalhealth has shown me both the agony and the resilience required in such a situation. When my daughter missed all criteria options for support due to her age, and was not classified as having a learning disability, the challenges only magnified. The waiting period for assessment felt unending, and in the meantime, supporting my child with acute mental health challenges without professional help seemed an unconquerable task.
The emotional toll this journey took on me as a parent and my family was profound. There were moments where the weight of the situation could have broken me mentally. The pressure of supporting a child in crisis, without external assistance, is a strain that many parents can relate to. It is a scenario marked by sleepless nights, unending worry, and the constant search for solutions.
The Power of Holistic and Wellness Therapies
In these challenging times, I found solace and strength in my holistic background and knowledge of wellness therapies. These practices became my lifeline, providing the support and stability I needed to navigate this time of my daughter’s condition. Holistic therapy, which emphasizes the connection between mind, body, and spirit, offered a sanctuary where I could recharge and gather the strength to face the continuous demands of caregiving.
Understanding and integrating wellness therapies such as mindfulness, meditation, Reiki, massage therapies, provided not just relief, but a renewed sense of hope. These therapies helped me regain balance, manage stress, and most importantly, maintain my mental well-being. They proved to be an invaluable tool in sustaining the relentless effort required to support my daughter.
I feel a drawn purpose in collaborating with local healthprofessionals, agencies, schools, and autism support organisations to offer accessible and affordable holistic therapy services. Subsidised or free sessions can ensure that all parents and carers can benefit from these practices, regardless of their financial situation.
My passion to support this is essential for the well-being of both the parents and caregivers, along with the individuals they care for. By integrating holistic therapies such as reiki, massage, and meditation into their lives, it can help them transition from burnout to balance. These practices offer a sustainable and effective way to reduce stress, promote relaxation, and enhance overall well-being, enabling them to continue to do their invaluable amazing job with a renewed energy and resilience.
