As temperatures rise, I wanted to remind everyone that hot weather can be particularly difficult for many autistic people and their families.

For some indivuduals, the heat can increase sensory challenges, anxiety, exhaustion and feelings of being overwhelmed.
What may seem like a normal hot day to others can be extremely uncomfortable and distressing.

A few things that may help:

Keep hydrated throughout the day.
Stay in cool, shaded places where possible.
Wear comfortable familiar clothing that feels right for them .
Use fans, cooling towels or their favourite cold drinks if this helps.

Take regular breaks and avoid the hottest part of the day.

Be patient and understanding if someone is struggling.
Every autistic person is different and theif experiences are different..

The most important thing we can do is listen or look out for signs if minimal verbal skills, support and make reasonable adjustments as and when needed.

Let’s look out for one another during this hot weather and remember that a little kindness and understanding can go a long way.

Stay safe everyone.
