'Not Every Closed Door is Locked. Push!'
Almost on a daily basis I am speaking to mum’s struggling with their children’s or adults mental health, autism and the system. It requires an enormous amount of resilience to parent a child who is experiencing mental health difficulties and diagnosed autistic. It is important that parents take care of their own emotional health too and sometimes I am.aware it’s easier said than done depending on your circumstances.
Sometimes our health and social health care system can let the most vulnerable people of society down. You as a parent/carer have to continue to advocate for your child as tired and drained as you may be feeling. Don’t worry if you have to ruffle some feathers. I do know it can be really hard, however, sometimes the only option is to keep pushing especially now when everything seems that much harder.
I remember reading a few years ago an article that mothers of adolescents and adults diagnosed with autism experience chronic stress comparable to combat soldiers and struggle with frequent fatigue . These mothers also spend significantly more time caregiving than mums of those individuals without disabilities.
The bottom line is when your child is in crisis, don’t knock on the door, kick it down and make them listen. Please do take care of yourselves, there is no shame in asking for help and take it one day at a time…..
Sending strength, love, and positive vibes ✨️
