The government is proposing major SEND reforms that could restrict EHCPs mainly to children with the most complex needs.
For many SEND families, EHCPs are the only legally enforceable way to secure the support their child needs in school.
By removing them from thousands of children across the country could weaken rights and leave schools struggling to meet their needs.
This could possibly affect hundreds of thousands of children currently receiving support.
EHCPs (Education, Health and Care Plans) are legally enforceable.
That means schools and local authorities must provide the support written in them.
For many families, an EHCP is the only way their child gets the help they need in school.
Under today’s proposed changes, many children who currently receive EHCPs could instead get school-managed support plans.
These may not carry the same legal protections. We need to see the finer detail.
That’s why so many SEND families are worried.
From what I can see across social media SEND campaigners are warning this could possibly mean:
• Fewer enforceable rights for children
• More pressure on mainstream schools
• Parents having less ability to challenge decisions
Writing
The government says the current SEND system is financially unsustainable and needs reform.
But families say the solution should be better funding and support and not by removing legal protections.
A public consultation is expected.
If you’re a parent, teacher, or supporter of SEND rights, now is the time to pay attention and make your voice heard!
