Like most parents of autistic adults, I worry about the future, especially in this uncertain and everchanging world .
‘Who will look after Angelo when I’m no longer here.’
I wish I had all the answers, however I do know doing nothing isn’t an option.
Your children and my sons deserve safety, dignity, and people who truly care and understand them.
So when I have shared in the past ‘speak up’ , I mean to councils, MPs, and adult social care.
Push for change because social care is lacking and seriously underfunded it so needs to be improved.
Sample letter adapt to your needs.
Dear [MP/Councillor’s name],
I am writing as a parent and lifelong carer of an autistic adult who is vulnerable and will always need support.
Like many families, my greatest fear is what will happen to my child when I am no longer able to care for them. This is not a distant worry ,it affects the decisions we make every day.Yet meaningful future planning and reliable adult social care support remain extremely limited.
While there are dedicated professionals working within the system, adult social care is overstretched, underfunded, and too often reactive rather than preventative. Families are left carrying enormous responsibility with little reassurance that safe, dignified, long-term support will be there when it is most needed.
Autistic adults deserve more than crisis management. They deserve consistent care, trained staff, supported living options, and planning that recognises parents will not live forever.
Families should not have to fight at breaking point to be heard.
I am asking you to:Prioritise funding for adult social care
Ensure long-term planning for autistic and disabled adults
Listen to and include the voices of families and carers
Push for accountability and improvement within social care services
I would appreciate a response outlining how you are addressing these issues locally and nationally, and what steps you will take to improve outcomes for autistic adults and their families.
Thank you for your time. I hope you will treat this issue with the urgency it deserves.
Yours sincerely,
