‘Hi I’m Rosie I’m 19 nearly 20 and I had a traumatic brain injury when I was three years old.
Doctors had low expectations for me and I said absolutely not. I relearned to walk and everything really quickly.
After my injury it left me with a visual impairment which makes me see in 2D sometimes. I don’t have good depth perception so don’t throw anything at me.
It left me with a condition called hemiplegia which makes my mobility not the best. I’ve got a footdrop so I’m continentally Tripping up but I like to say, i’m not clumsy I’m disable.
Another side-effect of the brain damage is I’ve got learning needs so I can’t process things as easy as other people, so that made school very difficult I used to get put separate from the other kids which just made me sad
I joined True colours when I was twelve and I fell in love with it and I just haven’t left. the whole atmosphere in classes is just amazing.
I started peer supporting at True Colours at seventeen which has given me so much joy, I love helping the kids I love all their individual personalities. I treat the kids the way I wanted to be treated.
I am forever grateful for experiences I’ve had at true colours . I perform annually at Whitley Bay Playhouse I’ve performed at tyne theatre them I performed on Autisms Got Talent in London with them.
Without true colours I would probably still be wearing a splint on my leg and my mobility would be a lot worse
Because of all the dancing I don’t have to do physio any more which is great because physio was boring and dancing is fun.
I’ve made so many friends at true colours who I love so much. when we see each other we act like we haven’t seen each other for ages , even though I probably saw them the day before.
We do so many things we perform for the community at events like Pride and in shopping centres.
At Christmas I was an elf
Which is so much fun seeing all the kids all excited to meet Santa doing festive games doing a Christmas showcase at Woodlands hall when we all wear our Christmas jumpers
The haf activities are amazing too having different experiences with your friends like the
The musical workshops
Where we can nerd out about musical theatre.
We do surf school, circus skills, movie days all sorts of things.
Thanks true colours I’ve got a massive passion for singing which has just grew bigger over the years I love doing the quirky warm ups have there do
I’m always singing at True even when no one else is it could be completely silent then I just break out in song
At true colours we are all so close to each other and that’s what’s amazing about it. We really are one big family.’
